Dublin Airport

Kilkeel

Dublin Airport - Kilkeel, Northern Ireland

Welcome to Ireland

Welcome to Ireland!

Upon your arrival at Dublin Airport, pick up your rental car and embark on your journey northwards. Your destination is the enchanting region of the Mourne Mountains, renowned for its outstanding beauty. As you arrive, take the time to settle into your accommodation and immerse yourself in the tranquil surroundings.

The Mourne Mountains offer a picturesque landscape with sweeping vistas, rolling hills, and serene lakes. Consider taking a leisurely stroll or hike to fully appreciate the natural beauty that this area has to offer. Capture the breathtaking views, and if time permits, explore some of the charming villages nestled within the foothills.

*If time allows, consider stopping by Ardgillan Castle to explore the picturesque rolling hills of the castle park.

Activity (optional)

Ardgillan Castle

Ardgillan, often called a castle, is a large country-styled house with castellated embellishments. Originally “Prospect House,” built in 1738 by Robert Taylor, it later gained west and east wings in the late 1800s.

Initially heavily wooded, Ardgillan’s name, from the Irish “Ard Choill” meaning High Wood, reflects its origin. The wooded area was cleared by service soldiers and itinerant workers, compensated with one penny a day, sleeping accommodations, and a meal.

The house, with two stories above a basement extending under the lawns, housed living quarters on the ground and first floors, while the west and east wings served as servants’ quarters and estate offices. The Castle, now restored, opens its ground floor rooms and kitchens to visitors through guided tours.

Activity (optional)

Park at Ardgillan Castle

Ardgillan Park stands out among Dublin’s regional parks due to its stunning views of the coastline. The panoramic scenery encompasses Rockabill Lighthouse, Colt Church, Shenick and Lambay Islands, including Sliabh Foy, the highest peak in the Cooley Mountains. Additionally, the sweeping beauty of the Mourne Mountains descending to the sea is visible.

This park, owned by Fingal County Council, officially opened to the public as a regional park in June 1985. Prior to its opening, initial efforts were made to transform the former arable farm into a public park. The demesne now features five miles of footpaths, some formed by reopening old avenues and others newly constructed. These paths create a diverse and captivating network through woodlands, offering a range of walks and vantage points from which visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the sea, coastline, and surrounding countryside.
