Setting Sail

Today your voyage starts by taking a shuttle from Galway City Centre to Rossaveal, where you take a ferry to the largest of the three Aran Islands, Inish Mor. The Gaelic language Irish is still spoken on the islands. Once on the Kilronan Pier you have the opportunity to explore the island on foot, by bike, by horse-drawn carriage or by minibus.

The landscape of Inis Mor (Inishmore) was carved from limestone eroded by centuries of relentless Atlantic winter storms. 

Generations of islanders who tilled hard-won, fertile land have created a patchwork of fields bordered by the dry-stone walls typical of the west coast. Inis Mor (Inishmore) is home to a variety of historical and prehistoric monuments, from the dramatic Bronze Age cliff-top fort of Dun Aonghasa to Teampull Bheanáin, believed to be the smallest church in the world.

Highlights

Dun Aonghasa is the most popular attraction on Inis Mor. It is located on the edge of a 90-meter-high cliff on the south side of the island and is a 3,000-year-old semi-circular stone fortress that offers breathtaking views over the Atlantic Ocean, spanning the entire length of the island. Dun Aonghasa is the largest of the prehistoric stone forts on the Aran Islands. It is surrounded by three massive dry-stone walls and a “chevaux-de-frise” made up of densely populated, rugged limestone rocks set vertically into the ground to deter attackers. The fortress is about 900 meters from the visitor center and is accessible over uneven terrain and loose rocks. Therefore, hiking boots or good walking shoes are recommended. There is no fence or barrier at the cliff edge, so please be careful.

The Wormhole, or Poll na bpeist, has become a very popular attraction on Inis Mor since the Red Bull Cliff Diving events in 2015 and 2017. The Wormhole is a naturally formed rectangular pool on the south side of the island. Please do not swim in the Wormhole as it is extremely dangerous.

The Seven Churches, or Na Seacht dTeampaill in Irish, are located in the west of Inis Mor in the village of Eoghanacht and were one of the largest monastic foundations and pilgrimage centers on the west coast of Ireland. Tradition has it that Breacan came here from Kilbrecan near Quin in County Clare in the earliest times. On the island, the tradition states that his foundation competed with St. Enda’s foundation in the east of the island. In fact, the two saints are said to have eventually agreed to divide the island between them. Although referred to as “the seven churches,” there are actually only two churches today.

Seal Colony of Inishmore is located on the coastal road about a mile from Kilmurvy Beach. The seal colony is clearly signposted and has on-site picnic tables, so bring a packed lunch and take advantage of the tables and chairs to enjoy it in the beautiful surroundings. The best sightings of seals occur at low tide when the seals bask on the rocks. At high tide, the seals are much harder to spot, as you can only see their heads in the water. During low tide at the Inishmore seal colony, you can observe 5 to 20 seals at the same time.

Embarking on the drive from Galway to Dublin is a scenic journey through the heart of Ireland.

Continuing the drive, you’ll witness the changing landscapes as you approach the equine capital of Ireland, Kildare. Irish National Stud, renowned for breeding race champions, is worth a visit.
