Ireland is long recognized as the land of leprechauns and the fairy folk. Children in Ireland are currently discovering Ireland’s long-lost fairy heritage. The little winged folk have been making themselves much more visible of late and have been inviting us humans to catch a glimpse of their mystical world. Here are a few fairy trails in Offaly with more being ‘discovered’ by families whilst out walking.

Lough Boora Parklands, Boora

• The fairy trail at Lough Boora Parklands will take you along a magical journey down ‘Fairy Avenue’. The wishing seat is one of the first things you will stumble upon where you can close your eyes and wish for the stars.

Charleville Castle – Fairy Trail

• Discover the hidden fairy houses, the worry tree where children can “give” to the fairies their worries! they will take them away
• Hear the tales of famous Irish fairies, lots of Irish girl’s names are after fairies, Grainne (Sunshine), and the most popular Irish name Naimh means “spirit” after the most famous fairy Naimh Ceann Oir (Niamh of the Golden Hair)

These fairy trails are designed for children and are a great way to get out into the forests of Offaly and explore with the whole family.

Wild Romantic Connemara

This day is dedicated to the breathtaking scenery of Connemara! This area is crisscrossed by moors, lakes and high mountains. Oscar Wilde once described Connemara as a “wild beauty”.

A very special experience is the ride on the spectacular Sky Road. This panoramic road takes you right through the rough nature of Connemara.

Another attraction is the Dan O’Hara Cottage. Experience Irish history up close.

Kylemore Abbey

As proof of his love, the English financier and merchant Mitchell Henry had this magnificent castle built for his wife, Margaret, at the place where they had previously spent their honeymoon. It was intended to be a cozy home and retreat for the family. Unfortunately, just three years after its completion, this wonderful love story ended tragically. Margaret Henry passed away during a stay in Egypt. Her body was brought back to Kylemore and laid to rest in a simple mausoleum on the grounds.

In 1920, Kylemore came under the ownership of Benedictine nuns. In addition to the restored rooms in the castle, visitors can also explore the Victorian Walled Garden and the beautifully landscaped park grounds, making it a worthwhile destination.

Oyster Farm

Embarking on a farm tour provides a firsthand look at the work and the meticulous process behind cultivating exquisite oysters. 

Dive into the intricacies of the farming process, from seed to plate, witnessing the team in action, whether grading, packing, or tending to bags in the bay.

For the adventurous, there’s an opportunity to shuck your own oyster! The initial oyster experience is a burst of flavors, and with subsequent tastings, you’ll savor the genuine essence—described as sweet, with creamy undertones and a hint of earthiness.

This immersive, authentic encounter unfolds against the breathtaking backdrop of the Connemara National Park, just a short 15-minute drive from Kylemore Abbey.

Killary Sheep Farm

The Killary Sheep Farm is in stunning Connemara overlooking Killary Fjord. A traditional working mountain farm with approx. 200 ewes and lambs roaming freely in the mountain with spectacular scenery overlooking Killary Fjord, on the Wild Atlantic Way. 

Tom welcomes visitors of all ages and looks forward to introducing you to working sheep and dog demonstrations and walks are held at 11.am, 1pm, 3pm, 7 days a week or by appointment, please arrive 15 minutes before the tour starts to check in. Killary Sheep Farm is open all year round (weather permitting).

Killary Sheep Farm is situated on the southern shores of Killary harbour 6km from the Village of Leenane, Co. Galway on the N59.

Dunguaire Castle

Dunguaire Castle, located in the seaside village of Kinvara, is rumored to be the most photographed castle in Ireland, and it’s easy to see why. Its picturesque setting by the roadside and proximity to the sea make it a popular attraction for visitors.

The castle was constructed in 1520 by the Hynes clan and later purchased by Oliver St. John Gogarty, a prominent surgeon and literary figure, in the early 20th century.

Like many historic sites in Ireland, Dunguaire Castle is steeped in local folklore and legend. One such legend suggests that if you stand at the castle’s gate and ask a question, it will be answered by the end of the day.

The castle also offers guided tours, which provide visitors with a glimpse into the castle’s rich history and architecture.

Cliffs of Moher

Visiting the Cliffs of Moher is an awe-inspiring experience that will leave you breathless. As you approach these majestic cliffs, you can feel the sheer magnitude of nature’s power and beauty.

Sean’s Bar – the Oldest pub in Ireland

Sean’s Bar dates back to 900 AD and has operated as a pub on the same site for over 1,100 years. This remarkable continuity has earned Sean’s Bar the Guinness World Record for being the oldest pub in Ireland.

Archaeological evidence, including wattle and daub walls, along with the discovery of medieval coins and tokens on-site, supports the claim that Sean’s Bar has been serving drinks since 900 AD or even earlier. 

While the current building housing Sean’s Bar dates back to the 18th century, it incorporates remnants of even earlier structures on the same site, including a section of the original 900 AD wattle and daub wall that remains visible within the pub. 

Ongoing research has been conducted to verify Sean’s Bar’s claim as the oldest pub in the world, yet to date, no older pub has been substantiated.

Kilbeggan Whiskey

Kilbeggan is a small production set in the old distillery building. As well as watching the modern way of making whiskey you also can go back in history.
